September 2026:

High Commended: Medicines Safety Improvement Programme  (MedSIP) HSJ Patient Safety Congress and Awards

The Pain Café’s work with the National Medicines Safety Improvement Programme (MedSIP) and Health Innovation Southwest and West was rewarded as ‘Highly Commended’ at the HSJ Patient Safety Congress and Awards on 28th Sept 2026.

The project was aimed at addressing the widespread prescribing of opioids for long term pain. Our work with pain cafes has been central to supporting a reduction in medication related harm the national MedSIP programme.

The collaborative approach with Health Innovation networks helped moved toward a model that includes self-management, personalised care and shared decision-making.

The national case study highlighted that

  • 54,824 fewer people prescribed oral or transdermal opioids for more than 3 months

  • 13 334 fewer people per month prescribed with high dose opioids

  • estimated 884 lives saved over two years

  • 12 000 people benefitted from chronic pain self-management support

  • 65 plus New pain cafes and groups now in existence

Whilst the economic impact was not measured, the impact on managing non-cancer chronic pain was noted locally with reports of people returning to work, civic engagement and more able to manage daily living.

September 2026:

Farming Health Hubs receive recognition from the Chair and Chief Executive of NHS Cornwall

The team were delighted to recieve a letter from Matthew Taylor and Adie Perry, recognising the impact of the Farming Health Hubs in Cornwall. Excerpts from the letter include:

"The board were so impressed by what we heard about your work when we met last week, we want to extend our sincere thanks for the outstanding work of the Market Health Hub at Holsworthy Livestock Market. You make such a positive difference to farming communities across Cornwall, Devon and beyond.

We know that since launching in 2023, the hub has supported more than 700 farmers and visitors, providing accessible health and wellbeing support in a setting that is familiar, trusted and convenient. The impact of the service is so clearly demonstrated through personal stories such as we heard from Rolly Nancekivells.

We wanted to know how much we recognise the commitment, compassion and expertise shown by you and the wider team. The success of the hub reflects the strength of collaboration between the Trust, the local primary care network, livestock markets, Imagine If, and the University of Exeter. Together, you have developed an innovative model of care that aligns closely with the ambitions of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan, supporting the shift from hospital to community-based care, from analogue to digital approaches, and from treatment to prevention. The collaborative approach with Health Innovation networks helped moved toward a model that includes self-management, personalised care and shared decision-making.

Please accept our heartfelt thanks for everything you do. The Market Health Hub is a wonderful example of person-centred, community-focused care, and you should be enormously proud of the difference you are making to the lives of local people.
With sincere appreciation and thanks."
